Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- A break in one of the wires in the CAN network
- One of the wires in the CAN network is short-circuited to ground
- One of the wires in the CAN network is short-circuited to voltage
- The wires in the CAN network are short-circuited to each other
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in all control modules and note them; communication faults often occur together
- 2Clear the fault codes and road test; some codes only disappear in the next operating cycle, so check again after a while
- 3Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual
- 4Examine the connectors and wiring in the CAN network for loose connections, chafing and pinch damage
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check communication with the engine control module and the rest of the CAN network
