Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
7 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The SUM receives information from the steering angle sensor (SAS) over CAN communication and is missing an expected message about steering angle or steering angle speed. The fault code is set when the message stops arriving.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- A break in one of the wires in the CAN network
- One of the wires in the CAN network is short-circuited to ground
- One of the wires in the CAN network is short-circuited to voltage
- The wires in the CAN network are short-circuited to each other
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in all control modules and note them; communication faults often occur several at a time
- 2Clear the fault codes and road test; some only disappear in the next operating cycle, so check again a while later
- 3Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual
- 4Examine the connectors and wiring in the CAN network for loose connections, chafing and pinch damage
- 5The fault concerns the signal from the steering angle sensor to the steering system: have a workshop check it and do not work on the steering yourself
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment take measurements on the CAN network
Symptoms you may notice2
- A message appears in the information display
- The Four-C function does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The Four-C function is switched off
