SWM-E001 - Control module communication. Faulty communication
System
Steering Wheel Module (SWM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The steering wheel module (SWM) has registered a serious disturbance in the CAN communication, so communication is blocked. The fault can lie in a short circuit or open circuit on the CAN wires, in the steering wheel module itself, or in another control module on the same part of the CAN network.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the steering wheel module (SWM)
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the CEM and in the other control modules; if the CEM shows codes for lost communication, deal with those first
- 2Check the battery voltage and that the connectors to the steering wheel module are secure and free from corrosion
- 3Twist the wiring harness and move the connectors while the car is standing still, to see whether the fault comes and goes
- 4Clear the fault codes and road test the car
- 5After a repair: disconnect the battery negative terminal for a while and reconnect it, so that control modules stuck in limited mode (Limp-Home) are reset
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop measure the CAN wires to ground and supply voltage and check the other control modules; a faulty one must be replaced
Symptoms you may notice5
- The turn signal switch does not work
- The turn signal lamps do not work
- Cruise control does not work at all
- The windshield wipers only run at the lowest speed
- The front windshield washer does not work
What the fault can affect2
- The steering wheel module (SWM) shuts itself off (“bus-off”)
- It stays off until its power supply is cut and reconnected, and then tries to communicate again
