What does this fault code mean?

The steering wheel module (SWM) does not have the same configuration ID as the signal configuration that the central electronic module (CEM) sends on the CAN network. The fault code is also set if communication between the steering wheel module and the CEM is interrupted. While the code is set, normal CAN communication does not work, although the module still responds to diagnostic commands.

    Possible causes

    • Faulty CAN configuration ID, for example a used steering wheel module with different software or hardware that is not intended for this particular car
    • Open circuit in the CAN wires running from the steering wheel module (SWM) to the central electronic module (CEM)

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the fault codes in the CEM and in the other control modules; if the CEM shows codes for lost communication, deal with those first
    2. 2If the steering wheel module has been replaced or is used, check that it is intended for this particular car, since a unit from another car can give this code
    3. 3Check that the connectors to the steering wheel module are secure and free from corrosion, and twist the wiring harness at the connectors to see whether the fault comes and goes
    4. 4Clear the fault code and road test the car to see whether it returns
    5. 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the CAN wiring between the steering wheel module and the CEM and, if needed, download new software to the steering wheel module

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Cruise control does not work at all
    • The turn signal lamps do not work
    • Radio controls on the steering wheel do not respond
    • The front windshield washer does not work
    • The windshield wipers only run at the lowest speed

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
