What does this fault code mean?

The transmission control module (TCM) has detected a signal that is too high on the wire for shift solenoid S1, at a time when the solenoid is meant to be off. The solenoid takes part in gear shifting, and depending on the gearbox design it is active in 1st and 4th gear or in 2nd and 3rd gear.

    Possible causes

    • The signal wire is short-circuited to supply voltage
    • Internal fault in the control module

    What you can do

    1. 1With a diagnostic tool, read the oil temperature in live data on a test drive; it should rise. A faulty oil temperature sensor can cause this code, so check it first
    2. 2Read and clear the fault code, then road test the car to see whether it returns
    3. 3If you have a diagnostic tool: activate solenoid S1 with the selector in position P and read the current in live data; if it fluctuates, this points to a contact problem
    4. 4Have a workshop measure the signal wire to solenoid S1 against supply voltage and ground at the transmission connector
    5. 5If no fault is found in the wiring, have a workshop check solenoid S1 and the control module, and reset the transmission adaptation and oil quality counter after the repair

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The general orange warning lamp is lit
    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
    • Gear shifts are harsh
    • Gear shifts do not occur
    • The lock-up function does not work

    What the fault can affect2

    • The control module's emergency program (Limp-home) is activated
    • The Emergency mode I program in the transmission control module is activated

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
