What does this fault code mean?
The control module has detected a signal that is too low on the wire to shift solenoid S1 while it is meant to be on, so the solenoid cannot be switched on. Solenoid S1 works together with S2 for gear shifting, so the fault affects how the gears engage.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Defective solenoid
- Internal fault in the control module
What you can do
- 1A faulty oil temperature sensor can cause the fault. With a diagnostic tool, follow the oil temperature in live data during a test drive and check that it rises
- 2Clear the fault code and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: activate solenoid S1 with the selector in position P and check in live data that the value switches between off and on
- 4Check that the connectors to the transmission and the control module are secure and free from corrosion
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop measure the wire to solenoid S1 against ground and replace the solenoid if needed
Symptoms you may notice5
- The automatic transmission warning lamp flashes
- No lock-up function
- Gear shifts are harsh
- No gear shifts
- The general orange warning lamp is lit
What the fault can affect3
- Gear 1 is blocked
- Shifting between neutral and D is blocked
- The control module's emergency program (Limp-home) is activated
