What does this fault code mean?
The control module registers that the signal is missing in the circuit for shift solenoid S2, which is described as an open circuit. Depending on the gearbox design, the fault is registered either when the solenoid is activated or when it is not. The solenoid takes part in gear shifting, so the fault shows in how the gears engage.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Defective solenoid
- Fault inside the transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1A faulty oil temperature sensor can cause this in some cases, so check it first. With a diagnostic tool, follow the oil temperature in live data on a test drive
- 2Check the connectors to the transmission and the control module for a firm fit and corrosion; twist the harness at the connectors to see if the fault comes and goes
- 3Clear the fault code and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: activate solenoid S2 with the selector in position P and read the current in live data; a current that fluctuates points to a contact problem
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop look for an open circuit in the wire to solenoid S2 and replace the solenoid if the wire is intact
Symptoms you may notice5
- The general orange warning lamp is lit
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
- No lock-up function
- No gear shifts
- Gear shifts are harsh
What the fault can affect2
- The control module's emergency program (Limp-home) is activated
- The Emergency mode 1 program in the transmission control module is activated
