What does this fault code mean?
The control module has found that the vehicle and engine speed signals do not match the expected values, and that a wrong gear is engaged compared with the calculated one. This points to a solenoid fault in the hydraulic circuit for gears 1–2 or 3–4, which includes solenoid S2.
Possible causes
- Glycol in the transmission fluid
- Solenoid S2's hydraulic valve is jammed, either open or closed
- The solenoid binds or is stuck, giving a defective control system
- Internal leakage in the transmission
- Worn or damaged clutch plates in the transmission
- Mechanically defective solenoid
What you can do
- 1If other fault codes are stored, deal with them once this fault-tracing is complete
- 2Have a workshop check whether the transmission control module needs new software and download it if needed; old software in the engine control module can also cause the fault
- 3Clear the fault code and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 4Have a workshop check whether coolant has leaked into the transmission fluid, since glycol in the oil is a possible cause
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the solenoids and valves in the transmission; a mechanical fault in the transmission means the transmission must be replaced
Symptoms you may notice5
- The general orange warning lamp is lit
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
- No gear shifts
- Gear shifts are harsh
- No lock-up function
What the fault can affect2
- Only gears 3 and R can be selected in limp-home mode
- Once the ignition has been switched off, the control module returns to normal operation and all four forward gears can be used again
