What does this fault code mean?

The control module has not received a signal from the speed sensor on the transmission. The sensor reports the speed of the input shaft, which sits downstream of the torque converter. The signal is used to match gearbox speed against road speed and to control gear shifts and the lock-up function.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance in the connections
    • The speed sensor on the transmission is loose
    • The speed sensor on the transmission does not function

    What you can do

    1. 1Check the connector to the transmission control module for contact resistance and oxidation
    2. 2Have a workshop check that the speed sensor is firmly fitted and not damaged
    3. 3Clear the fault code and road test the car to see whether it returns
    4. 4If the fault remains, have a workshop replace the speed sensor; the sensor itself may be at fault

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
    • The general warning lamp is lit
    • No lock-up function
    • Gear shifts are harsh
    • No gear shifts

    What the fault can affect1

    • The emergency program Emergency mode 1 is started in the transmission control module

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
