What does this fault code mean?
The control module registers a faulty signal from the speed sensor on the transmission when the vehicle speed is above a certain level. The fault is intermittent, so it may have occurred on an earlier occasion without being active now.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage in the power supply
- Open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage in the signal wire
- Defective speed sensor
- Incorrect transmission fitted after a replacement
What you can do
- 1The fault is intermittent: check the connectors on the transmission and the control module for contact resistance and oxidation, and see whether the harness is chafed where it bends
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the transmission input and output speeds in live data as the car accelerates and check that the values track each other
- 3Clear the fault code and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 4If the transmission has been replaced, have a workshop check that the correct one is fitted, and that the sensor wires are intact
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the wiring to the sensor and replace the sensor if needed
Symptoms you may notice4
- The general orange warning lamp is lit
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
- No lock-up function
- Gear shifts are harsh
What the fault can affect3
- No torque reduction during shifting
- No lock-up function
- The Emergency mode I program in the transmission control module is activated
