What does this fault code mean?

The control module works out the gear ratio for first gear from the input and output speed signals and compares it with the expected ratio for that gear. When the ratio deviates, first gear is not working as it should.

    Possible causes

    • Glycol in the transmission fluid
    • Contact resistance in the circuit to solenoids S1 and S2
    • Interference with or faults in the signal from the transmission speed sensor
    • Gear-shift position sensor incorrectly adjusted
    • Transmission oil level too low
    • Solenoid S1 has stuck in the OFF position

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the transmission speed in live data on a test drive in first gear and check that it matches the car's speed
    2. 2Read the fault codes in all control modules; if there are other codes, for example in the transmission control module, deal with those first
    3. 3Have a workshop check the oil level and condition; a low level and coolant in the oil can cause the fault
    4. 4Check the connectors to the transmission and the control module for contact resistance and oxidation
    5. 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check solenoids S1 and S2 and the gear-shift position sensor, and repair or replace whatever is faulty

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The general orange warning lamp is lit
    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
    • No lock-up function
    • Gear shifts slip abnormally
    • Gear shifts are harsh

    What the fault can affect2

    • The control module's emergency program (Limp-home) is activated
    • An emergency program, Emergency mode I or Emergency mode 1, is activated in the transmission control module

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
