What does this fault code mean?
The control module works out the gear ratio for third gear from the input and output speed signals and compares it with the expected ratio for that gear. When the ratio deviates, third gear is not working as it should.
Possible causes
- Glycol in the transmission fluid
- Contact resistance in the circuit to solenoids S1 and S2
- Solenoid S3 has stuck in the OFF position
- Solenoid S4 has stuck in the OFF position
- Transmission oil level too low
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool: read the status of solenoids S3 and S4 in live data with the selector in position P, and see whether it responds when you activate them
- 2Road test the car after the fault code has been cleared to see whether the fault returns
- 3Have a workshop check the oil level and quality of the transmission fluid
- 4Check the connectors on the transmission and the control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check solenoids S1 to S4 and the gear-shift position sensor, and repair or replace whatever is faulty
Symptoms you may notice4
- The general orange warning lamp is lit
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
- No lock-up function
- The gears slip in an abnormal way
What the fault can affect2
- The control module's emergency program (Limp-home) is activated
- The emergency program Emergency mode 1 starts in the transmission control module
