What does this fault code mean?
The control module works out the gear ratio for fourth gear from the input and output speed signals and compares it with the expected ratio for that gear. When the ratio deviates, fourth gear is not working as it should.
Possible causes
- Glycol in the transmission fluid
- Contact resistance in the circuit to solenoids S1 and S2
- Solenoid S2 is stuck switched on
- Gear-shift position sensor incorrectly adjusted
- Transmission oil level too low
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool: compare input and output speed in live data on a test drive and check that the ratio between them stays steady
- 2Read the fault codes in all control modules and deal with any other codes first
- 3Have a workshop check that the transmission oil level is correct and that the oil does not contain glycol
- 4Check that the connectors in the transmission connector are firmly seated and not corroded
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check solenoid S2 and the gear-shift position sensor, and adjust or replace what is wrong
Symptoms you may notice5
- The general orange warning lamp is lit
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
- Gear shifts are harsh
- No gear shifts
- The automatic transmission warning light blinks
What the fault can affect2
- The Limp-home mode is activated in the control module
- An emergency program starts in the transmission control module
