What does this fault code mean?

The control module works out the gear ratio for fifth gear from the input and output speed signals and compares it with the expected ratio for that gear. When the ratio deviates, fifth gear is not working as it should.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance in the circuit to solenoids S1 to S5 and SLS
    • Solenoid S2 has stuck in the OFF position
    • Solenoid S3 has stuck in the ON position
    • Solenoid SLS has stuck in the ON position
    • Mechanical fault in the transmission, where worn components cause slipping or too low line pressure

    What you can do

    1. 1Move the selector through all positions and see whether the display updates. If it shows an undefined position, such as O2, the gear-shift position sensor is misadjusted
    2. 2Read the fault codes in all control modules before replacing anything
    3. 3Have a workshop check that the software in the transmission control module is right for the car, and reprogram the module with new software if needed
    4. 4Clear the fault code and road test the car to see whether it returns
    5. 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the solenoids and the connectors for contact resistance and oxidation, and repair or replace whatever is faulty

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The general orange warning lamp is lit
    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
    • No lock-up function
    • Gear shifts are harsh
    • The gears slip abnormally

    What the fault can affect2

    • The Limp-home function in the control module is activated
    • Emergency mode I starts in the transmission control module

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
