What does this fault code mean?
The gear-shift position sensor is built into the transmission control module and tells it which gear the selector is in. The control module has registered an incorrect signal from the first Hall sensor, which can affect how the module reads the selected gear.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Gear-shift position sensor incorrectly adjusted
- Fault inside the transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1With the ignition on, move the selector through all positions and check that the display follows; an undefined position on the display points to a misadjusted sensor
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: read the gear-shift position sensor in live data while the selector is moved, and check that the value changes with the lever
- 3Check the connectors on the transmission and the control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If the fault remains, have a workshop check the wiring to the gear-shift position sensor for open circuits and short circuits to ground and supply voltage, and adjust the sensor if needed
Symptoms you may notice5
- The general orange warning lamp is lit
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
- No lock-up function
- No gear shifts
- The engine does not start
What the fault can affect3
- The Limp-home program in the control module is activated
- Adaptation is blocked
- The control module uses the gear position that was last selected
