What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the lock-up solenoid (SLU) is stuck in the ON position, so the lock-up function stays engaged all the time. The control module compares the speed signal with the rpm signal from the transmission sensors and with the engine speed, and when the signals do not agree, or the transmission jerks at lock-up, the fault is confirmed.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit in the control signal wire or signal ground
- Solenoid not working
- Internal fault inside the transmission control unit (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Have a diagnostic tool? Watch the lock-up function in live data during the road test and see whether it stays engaged all the time
- 3Check the transmission oil level and quality; if it is low, look for leaks and top up. Burnt-smelling oil should be changed by a workshop
- 4Use a multimeter to check the wires between the transmission connector and the lock-up solenoid for an open circuit, and check the connectors for oxidation
- 5Have a workshop check the solenoid with diagnostic equipment; if it is fault-free the transmission control system may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice5
- General warning lamp on
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- Harsh gear shifting
- The car does not shift gears
- Abnormally slipping gear changes
What the fault can affect3
- Adaptation in the transmission is blocked
- The lock-up function is blocked
- The slip lock-up function is blocked
