TCM-0053 - Lock-up pressure switch. Jammed
System
Transmission Control Module (TCM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:

Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module receives a signal from the lock-up pressure switch (PS4) to check the position of the lock-up valve. The fault indicates the lock-up solenoid is jammed open, based on the pressure switch reading.
Possible causes
- The lock-up pressure switch is stuck
- Contact resistance in the connections
- The transmission oil level is too high
- Mechanical fault in the transmission control system
- Electrical fault in the pressure sensor circuit
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes and deal with any other transmission fault codes first
- 2Check the transmission oil level; a level that is too high can cause the fault, so if the level is wrong a workshop should correct it
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the pressure switch have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground
- 4Have a workshop check the connectors to the transmission and the pressure switch module for contact resistance and oxidation, and check the oil filter for particles
- 5If the fault remains after these checks the pressure switch module may need replacing; a workshop does this
Symptoms you may notice3
- General orange warning lamp on
- No lock-up function
- Harsh gear shifting
What the fault can affect3
- The Emergency mode II program is activated
- The line pressure is not reduced when shifting or when the gear selector is moved between P-R, N-R and N-D
- No torque limiting request is sent to the engine control module when shifting
