What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module calculates the gear ratio from the input and output speed of the transmission. It has found that the ratio is close to a gear other than gear 1, which the control module has selected. Gear 1 has therefore not engaged properly.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- One of the solenoids has stuck in the OFF or ON position
- Mechanical fault in the transmission
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the transmission oil level and quality; if low, look for leaks and top up. Burnt-smelling oil should be changed by a workshop
- 3Have a diagnostic tool? Read the current gear in live data during the road test and see whether it matches what the car is really doing
- 4Have a workshop check the solenoids that engage gear 1 and their connectors; if nothing is found, the control system may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- General warning lamp on
- Abnormally slipping gear changes
- The car does not shift gears
What the fault can affect1
- The transmission switches over to an auxiliary program
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
