What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module works out the gear ratio from the rotational speeds going into and out of the transmission. It has found that the ratio is close to a gear other than gear 4, which the control module has selected, so gear 4 has not engaged as it should.
Possible causes
- Poor contact, or a solenoid jammed in the OFF or ON position
- Mechanical fault in the transmission
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code and road test the car; if it returns, the transmission solenoids and connectors should be checked
- 2Have a diagnostic tool? Read the current gear in live data while driving and see whether gear 4 is actually engaged
- 3Check that the connectors to the transmission are secure and free from oxidation; a loose connector or oxidation should be put right by a workshop
- 4Have a workshop check the solenoids; if no fault is found the control system may need replacing, and if the fault remains the transmission may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- General warning lamp on
- Abnormally slipping gear changes
- No gear changes
What the fault can affect1
- The transmission switches over to an auxiliary program
