What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module has checked the gear ratio against the speeds going into and out of the transmission. The ratio does not match gear 5, which the control module has selected, and is close to another gear instead. This means gear 5 has not engaged correctly.
Possible causes
- Poor contact, or a solenoid jammed in the OFF or ON position
- Mechanical faults in the transmission
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code, clear it and make a short test drive to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the transmission oil quality and level; if it is low, look for leaks and top up with the correct oil. If the oil smells burnt, have a workshop change it
- 3Have a diagnostic tool? Compare the current gear in live data with what the car does in fifth; if they do not agree, that is where the fault shows
- 4Have a workshop check the solenoids and connectors; if no fault is found the transmission control system may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- General warning lamp on
- Abnormally slipping gear changes
- No gear changes
What the fault can affect1
- The transmission switches over to an auxiliary program
