What does this fault code mean?
The start inhibitor makes sure the engine can only be started with the gear selector in position P or N. The transmission control module sends a signal to the engine control module that tells it starting is allowed when the signal is grounded. The fault means the signal cannot be grounded, so the engine control module is not given permission to start the engine.
Possible causes
- The signal cable is short-circuited to voltage
- Internal fault inside the transmission control unit (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code, clear it and check whether it comes back
- 2Have a diagnostic tool? Read the start inhibitor status with the brake pressed while moving the selector; it should show start permitted only in P and N
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the cable between the transmission control module and the engine control module has no short circuit to voltage
- 4Have a workshop check the connections and put right the fault as needed
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine does not start
