What does this fault code mean?
The start inhibitor makes sure the engine can only be started with the gear selector in position P or N, so the car does not move off when it is started. The transmission control module sends a signal to the engine control module, which should be grounded when starting is allowed. The fault means the signal is grounded all the time, including in gear positions where starting should not be allowed.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- The signal cable is short-circuited to ground
- Internal fault inside the transmission control unit (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code, start the engine again and see whether the code returns
- 2With diagnostic equipment, check the start inhibitor status in each gear position with the brake pressed; start should be allowed only in P and N
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the cable between the transmission control module and the engine control module has no short circuit to ground
- 4Have a workshop check the connectors and wiring and fix the fault
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start
- The engine can start with the selector in R or D
