What does this fault code mean?
The transmission speed sensor gives the transmission control module a signal about the rotational speed of the output drive shaft, and the control module calculates the output speed from it. The signal is also used for the gear ratio and for diagnostics. The fault means the circuit to the speed sensor is open, so the signal is missing.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the power supply or signal cable
- Power supply or signal cable short-circuited to voltage
- The transmission speed sensor is not working
- Internal fault inside the transmission control unit (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the cables to the speed sensor have no open circuit, and that the connectors are secure and free from oxidation
- 3Have a diagnostic tool? Read the transmission speed in live data while driving; if the value stays still although the car is moving, this is the fault
- 4Have a workshop check the sensor and the control module; the fault may be in either the sensor or the control module
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- General warning lamp on
- No lock-up function
- Harsh gear shifting
What the fault can affect3
- Adaptation and lock-up are blocked
- Slip lock-up is blocked
- Neutral check is blocked
