What does this fault code mean?

The transmission speed sensor sends a signal about input shaft rpm behind the torque converter. The control module uses the signal for shift timing, line pressure, engine torque and lock-up. The fault means the circuit to the sensor is open, so the signal is missing.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit in the power supply or signal cable
    • The transmission speed sensor is not working
    • Internal fault inside the transmission control unit (TCM)

    What you can do

    1. 1Read off the fault code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
    2. 2Use a multimeter to check that the power and signal leads to the speed sensor have no open circuit; check the connectors for oxidation and loose connections
    3. 3Have a diagnostic tool? Read the transmission speed in live data while driving; if the value stays still while the car moves, the sensor or its wiring is a likely cause
    4. 4Have a workshop check the speed sensor; if it is faulty it should be replaced

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
    • General warning lamp on
    • No lock-up function
    • Harsh gear shifting
    • No gear changes

    What the fault can affect1

    • The Emergency mode 1 program in the transmission control module has been activated

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
