What does this fault code mean?
The gear selector module (GSM) sits in the top panel of the lever carrier and controls the P-position lock through an internal network. The fault means the control module has registered that the solenoid driver is switched on when it should be off. The fault therefore concerns how the lock is controlled, not the gear selector itself.
Possible causes
- The signal cable is short-circuited to voltage
- The solenoid is defective or not working
- Internal fault inside the gear selector unit (GSM)
What you can do
- 1With the ignition on and the selector in P: try to move it without the brake; it should not move. Then press the brake and try again; it should now move
- 2Read off the fault code, clear it and check whether it comes back
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the cable between the gear selector module and the solenoid is not shorted to voltage
- 4Have a workshop check the connectors and the cable; if no fault is found, the gear selector module may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice4
- General orange warning lamp on
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- The selector can be moved when the ignition is off
- General warning lamp on
What the fault can affect1
- The gear selector is not locked
