What does this fault code mean?
The gear selector module (GSM) sits beneath the top panel at the lever carrier and controls the P-position lock over an internal network. The fault means the signal to the P-lock solenoid is missing because the circuit is open, and the selector then stays locked in position P.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Open circuit in the signal or ground lead
- Internal fault inside the gear selector unit (GSM)
What you can do
- 1With the ignition on: press the brake and try to move the selector out of P; if it still will not move, the fault is present
- 2Read off the fault code, clear it and check whether it comes back
- 3Check the lead to the P-lock solenoid for breaks, loose contacts and chafing; use a multimeter to check that the lead has no open circuit
- 4Have a workshop check the gear selector module and the wiring; if no fault is found the gear selector module may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice3
- General orange warning lamp on
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- The gear lever cannot be moved out of position P
What the fault can affect1
- The gear selector is blocked
