What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module drives shift solenoid S3, one of the solenoids that change gears. The fault means the signal in the circuit to solenoid S3 is too high.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Internal fault in the control module
What you can do
- 1Have a diagnostic tool? Read the oil temperature in live data before and after a road test; it should have risen. If it looks unrealistic, the temperature sensor may be at fault
- 2Have a diagnostic tool? With the selector in P, activate solenoid S3 and check that the status switches between OFF and ON
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the lead to solenoid S3 is not live, and check the connectors for oxidation and loose contacts
- 4Have a workshop check the solenoid and the control module; if no fault is found in the lead, the solenoid may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice5
- General orange warning lamp on
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- Harsh gear shifting
- No gear changes
- No lock-up function
What the fault can affect1
- The control module's Emergency mode I program is activated
