What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module drives shift solenoids S1 to S5 through its own power stages and checks that the circuits work. The fault means the signal from shift solenoid S3 is missing.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Break in the signal lead
- Defective solenoid
- Internal fault inside the transmission control unit (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Have a diagnostic tool? With the selector in P, activate solenoid S3; if the status does not switch OFF and ON, the solenoid or lead is the likely cause
- 2Read off and clear the fault code afterwards; road test the car and see whether it comes back
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the solenoid circuit has no break; an endless resistance means the circuit is broken
- 4Have a workshop check the connectors and the wiring to the solenoid; if the fault remains the solenoid or the control module may need replacing

- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- Harsh gear shifting
- No gear changes
- No lock-up function
