What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module drives shift solenoids S1 to S5 together for gear changes, and solenoid S4 is one of them. The fault means the signal in the circuit to solenoid S4 is too low while the solenoid is activated.
Possible causes
- The signal wire is shorted to ground
- Defective solenoid
- Internal fault in the control module
What you can do
- 1Have a diagnostic tool? With the selector in P, activate solenoid S4 and check that the status switches between OFF and ON
- 2Use a multimeter to measure the resistance in the solenoid circuit; if it is very low, the signal wire may be shorted to ground
- 3Check that the connectors to the solenoid are secure and free from oxidation
- 4Have a workshop check the solenoid and the control module; if no fault is found in the wiring, one of them may need replacing

- No lock-up function
- Harsh gear shifting
- No gear changes
