What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module (TCM) has registered that drive forward or reverse does not engage when the gear selector is moved to R or D. The fault is due either to contact resistance, a solenoid stuck in the OFF or ON position, or a mechanical fault in the gearbox. Gear changes may then fail.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in connections, or a solenoid stuck in the OFF or ON position
- Mechanical faults in the gearbox
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code and road test to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the solenoids one at a time and check that each one's status changes between off and on
- 3Have a workshop check the connectors and wiring to the gearbox control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If a solenoid is stuck or a mechanical fault is present, have a workshop decide whether the gearbox needs replacing
- 5After a repair, a workshop should reset the adaptation and the fluid quality counter
Symptoms you may notice3
- The general warning lamp is lit
- The malfunction indicator lamp is lit
- Gear changes do not occur
What the fault can affect1
- An auxiliary program in the control module is activated
