What does this fault code mean?
The gear position sensor in the transmission control module has registered that the main sensor signal is too high. The sensor receives the selector position through a cable, so the fault may be due to the sensor position (offset) needing adjustment or an internal fault in the control module. Gear changes may then become harsh and the car switches to an emergency program.
Possible causes
- The gear position sensor position (offset) needs adjusting
- Internal fault inside the TCM
What you can do
- 1With a diagnostic tool, move the selector through all positions; an undefined reading in P, R, N or D means the cable needs checking
- 2Have a workshop check that the selector cable is correctly adjusted and calibrate the position sensor
- 3Clear the fault code and road test to see whether it returns
- 4If the code returns after calibration, have a workshop replace the transmission control module
Symptoms you may notice3
- The general warning lamp is lit
- The malfunction indicator lamp is lit
- Harsh gear changes
What the fault can affect1
- The control module emergency program Emergency mode 4 is activated
