What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the position of shift fork 1 is unreasonable. Shift fork 1 is one of four forks that engage the gears mechanically using solenoids, and each fork has its own position sensor that reports its position to the control module.
Possible causes
- Damaged position sensor for shift fork 1
- The position sensor reports an incorrect position
- Incorrect voltage supply to the sensor
- Damaged transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault codes from the transmission control module and deal first with any codes that may share the same cause, since a fault in the transmission often sets several codes
- 2If you have diagnostic equipment, look at the position value for shift fork 1 in live data and see whether it stands out clearly from the other forks
- 3If readings are within limits, the fault has probably been sporadic; clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
- 4If a value is outside or at the limit, a workshop should replace the mechatronic unit
- 5If the fault is inside the control module, it must be replaced; a new module is delivered without software and must be programmed by a workshop
Symptoms you may notice5
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- Yellow warning symbol and message in the display
- Gears shift hard or jerky, sometimes or all the time
- No movement forward or in reverse with a gear selected
- Gears shift too early, too late or too often, sometimes or all the time
