What does this fault code mean?

The position sensor for shift fork 2 sends too low a signal to the transmission control module (TCM). Shift fork 2 is one of the four forks that engage the gears, and the control module uses the sensor signal to know where the fork is. The cause can be in the cable, in the sensor or in the control module.

    Possible causes

    • Cable short-circuited to ground
    • Damaged position sensor
    • Damaged transmission control module (TCM)

    What you can do

    1. 1Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the voltage supply to the position sensors; if it is outside the normal range, the fault is inside the control module
    2. 2Use a multimeter to check that the cable to the position sensor for shift fork 2 has no contact with ground (the car body)
    3. 3If you have diagnostic equipment, look at the position value for shift fork 2 in live data and see whether it changes when the gears are engaged
    4. 4If a value is outside or at the limit, a workshop should replace the mechatronic unit; if readings are within limits, the fault has probably been sporadic
    5. 5If the fault is inside the control module, it must be replaced, and a new module is delivered without software and must be programmed by a workshop

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
    • Yellow warning symbol and message in the display
    • Gears shift hard or jerky, sometimes or all the time
    • Gear changes take too long to complete, sometimes or all the time
    • Gears shift too early, too late or too often, sometimes or all the time

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
