What does this fault code mean?
The position sensor for shift fork 3 indicates that the fork is out of position, but the speed ratio between the input and output shafts for the gear in use is reasonable. The transmission control module (TCM) has therefore found that the sensor reading does not match the actual position of the fork.
Possible causes
- Damaged position sensor
- The sensor gives the control module an incorrect position
- Incorrect voltage supply to the sensor
- Damaged transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault codes from the transmission control module and deal first with any codes that may share the same cause
- 2Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the voltage supply to the position sensors; if it is outside the normal range, the fault is inside the control module
- 3If you have diagnostic equipment, compare the position value for shift fork 3 with the others in live data and see whether it stands out clearly
- 4If a value is outside or at the limit, a workshop should replace the mechatronic unit; if readings are within limits, the fault has probably been sporadic
- 5If the fault is inside the control module, it must be replaced, and a new module is delivered without software and must be programmed by a workshop
Symptoms you may notice5
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- Message and yellow warning symbol in the display
- Gears shift hard or jerky, sometimes or all the time
- Gear changes take too long to complete, sometimes or all the time
- No automatic gear changes
