What does this fault code mean?
The position sensor for shift fork 3 shows neutral, but the ratio between input and output speed shows that a gear is engaged. The sensor signal therefore does not match the actual state of the transmission, and the transmission control module (TCM) registers the fault.
Possible causes
- Damaged position sensor
- The position sensor reports an incorrect position
- Incorrect voltage supply to the sensor
- Damaged transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault codes from the transmission control module and deal first with any codes that may share the same cause
- 2Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the voltage supply to the position sensors; if it is outside the normal range, the fault is inside the control module
- 3With diagnostic equipment, compare the sensor for shift fork 3, which shows neutral, with the others in live data to see if it matches the gear engaged
- 4If a value is outside or at the limit, a workshop should replace the mechatronic unit; if readings are within limits, the fault has probably been sporadic
- 5If the fault is inside the control module, it must be replaced, and a new module is delivered without software and must be programmed by a workshop
Symptoms you may notice5
- Check engine light comes on or behaves abnormally
- Yellow warning symbol and message in the display
- Gear changes take too long to complete, sometimes or all the time
- Gears shift too early, too late or too often, sometimes or all the time
- No forward or reverse movement with a gear selected
