What does this fault code mean?
Gear 6 is blocked. Gear 6 is one of the even gears, engaged by shift forks 3 and 4. The transmission control module (TCM) can block gears when it detects a fault that could damage the transmission if driving or shifting continues. The code is event controlled and usually means a temporary disruption rather than a permanent fault.
Possible causes
- Damaged valve
- Electrical fault that has not been detected
- Hydraulic fault that has not been detected
- Damaged gear mechanism
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code and road test the car to see whether it returns, since the code usually reflects a temporary disruption
- 2On new cars and transmissions, the synchronisation between parts can cause temporary problems that usually clear up by themselves
- 3If the problem persists, further action is needed, and a workshop should carry out the fault tracing
- 4Note how often the problem occurs and the odometer reading, as this matters for the assessment when the fault is common on new transmissions
