What does this fault code mean?
One of the transmission's three power stages, power stage 3, is not working correctly. The power stage controls the solenoids CSMS2, CSPS2 and SHSS1 in the transmission. The fault is detected when the output current is too high, when a circuit is open, or when the output voltage is too low. The fault is caused by a damaged power stage or a damaged control module.
Possible causes
- Damaged power stage
- Damaged transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM). If any of them cause too little voltage reaching the transmission control module, fix that first
- 2Check the connectors and wiring between the transmission control module and the CEM for oxidation, loose connections and open circuits
- 3Clear TCM-0540 and drive the car to see whether it returns
- 4Have a workshop check the power stage with diagnostic equipment. If the control module is faulty, a workshop must replace it
Symptoms you may notice5
- Malfunction Indicator Light (check engine) lit or behaving abnormally
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
- No automatic gear changes
- No forward or reverse movement with a gear selected
- The car may feel weak or lack power when pulling away from a standstill
What the fault can affect1
- The two other power stages can take over the function, but the transmission's function may be severely limited depending on which power stage is damaged
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
