What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module receives no torque figure from the engine control module (ECM) over CAN, or the figure is faulty. Shift timing and system pressure in the transmission depend on this signal. The fault may come from the central electronic module, from the engine control module, or from a CAN wire that breaks or shorts now and then.
Possible causes
- Fault in the central electronic module (CEM)
- The fault lies in the engine control module (ECM)
- A CAN wire that is intermittently broken or shorted, linking the engine module to the transmission module
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the CEM and the engine control module and fix them first. Clear TCM-0A31 only once they are gone
- 2If no other fault codes are stored, have a workshop trace the CAN network with diagnostic equipment
- 3Clear TCM-0A31 once everything is fixed and drive the car to see whether it returns

- Shifts hard or jerky
- Gear changes do not happen
- The lock-up function does not work
