What does this fault code mean?
The transmission (TCM) and the gear selector unit (GSM) talk over the LIN network. The code is set when the transmission finds that the gear selector unit signal is missing. The selector indicator then stops working, and modes and programs controlled from the selector may be blocked.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the LIN wire between the transmission control module and the gear selector module
- Open circuit in the supply or ground wire to the gear selector module
- Internal fault in the gear selector module
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2With diagnostic equipment: press the winter program switch (W) and check that its status changes. If it does not, communication with the gear selector is probably broken
- 3With diagnostic equipment: with the selector in M, push it towards + and - and check that the value updates
- 4Check the gear selector and transmission module connectors for poor contact and corrosion; the selector connector is reached by taking out the cigarette lighter or power socket
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the LIN wire and the supply and ground wires to the gear selector have no open circuit
- 6Have a workshop replace the gear selector module if the fault remains after the wiring and connectors have been checked
Symptoms you may notice2
- General warning lamp on
- The gear selector indication does not work
What the fault can affect3
- Manual shift mode (MAN) is blocked
- Winter program (W) is blocked
- Sport program is blocked
