What does this fault code mean?
The output shaft speed sensor sits inside the gearbox. The transmission control module uses its signal to work out the speed of the output shaft and compares it with the input speed and the vehicle speed, which controls shift timing and gives smooth shifts. The code is set when the voltage in the sensor circuit is too low, and then the shifts can become harsh or stop altogether.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the output shaft speed sensor circuit
- Supply voltage to the output shaft speed sensor shorted to ground
- The output shaft speed sensor in the gearbox is not working
- Internal fault in the transmission control module
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2If you have diagnostic equipment, follow the gearbox output shaft speed in live data during a road test and check that the value updates and follows the speed
- 3Check the connector at the gearbox sensor and at the transmission control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the sensor wires have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground
- 5Have a workshop troubleshoot the sensor and wiring with diagnostic equipment; if the sensor is faulty the gearbox may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice5
- The automatic gearbox shifts harshly or jerkily
- No automatic shifting
- The lock-up function does not work
- General warning lamp on
- The malfunction indicator (Check engine) lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect3
- The transmission control module falls back on the speed value that the brake control module (BCM) sends, instead of its own sensor
- Neutral control and adaptation are blocked
- If the BCM also reports an incorrect speed signal, the control module switches to the emergency program Emergency mode 3
