What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named after the brake pedal position sensor, it concerns the signal for the brake pedal position, which the engine control module (ECM) sends on the CAN network to the transmission control module. The transmission uses it for the shift lock function. The code is set when the signal is missing or invalid, which can make it hard to shift. This points to a fault in the engine control module or in the CAN wire between it and the transmission.
Possible causes
- Fault in the engine control module (ECM), which sends the signal
- Open circuit or short circuit on the CAN wire between the engine control module and the transmission control module, which may come and go
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the engine control module (ECM) and the central electronic control module (CEM) and fix them first; clear the code afterwards
- 2If you have diagnostic equipment, follow the brake pedal position in live data and check that the value changes when you press the pedal
- 3With the ignition off, check the CAN wire between the engine control module and the transmission control module for open circuits, chafing and loose connectors
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires are not shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 5Do not work on the brake system yourself; have a workshop troubleshoot from the engine control module (ECM) with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice4
- Message in the display
- Hard or impossible to shift
- The gear indicator does not work
- No manual shifting
What the fault can affect2
- The transmission control module uses a default value for the signal instead of the real position
- The adaptation function is blocked
