What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named after the economy mode switch, it concerns the signal for the drive mode selected in the car. The transmission control module receives it through the engine control module (ECM) on the CAN network. The code is set when the signal is missing or incorrect, and the transmission then uses a default value for the drive mode. This points to a fault in the engine control module or in the CAN wire between it and the transmission.
Possible causes
- Fault in the engine control module (ECM), which sends the drive mode signal
- Open circuit or short circuit on the CAN wire between the engine control module and the transmission control module, which may come and go
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the engine control module (ECM) and the central electronic control module (CEM) and fix them first; clear the code afterwards
- 2If you have diagnostic equipment, read the selected drive mode in live data and check that the value changes when you change drive mode
- 3With the ignition off, check the CAN wire between the engine control module and the transmission control module for open circuits, chafing and loose connectors
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires are not shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 5Have a workshop carry out the troubleshooting from the engine control module (ECM) with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
What the fault can affect1
- The transmission control module uses a default value for the drive mode instead of the selected one
