What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module has found a fault in one of the shift solenoids, S1 or S2. The fault may be poor contact, a damaged solenoid or a fault in the module, and the gearbox then cannot go into its emergency position.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or intermittent contact at the connector to shift solenoid S1 or S2
- Shift solenoid S1 is damaged
- Shift solenoid S2 is damaged
- Software fault in the transmission control module
- Internal fault in the transmission control module
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2With the ignition off, check the connectors to shift solenoids S1 and S2 for contact resistance, oxidation and loose contact
- 3Have a workshop check the solenoids and wiring with diagnostic equipment and replace the damaged solenoid
- 4If the fault remains after this check, have a workshop reload the transmission software
- 5Do not drive the car when the gearbox is in neutral and will not select a gear; have a workshop check it
Symptoms you may notice5
- Shifts too early, too late or too often
- No automatic shifting
- The lock-up function does not work
- No movement forwards or backwards in gear
- The engine stalls at idle when a gear is selected
What the fault can affect1
- The gearbox is disconnected into neutral
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
