What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module has registered that shift solenoid S2 has become stuck, either in the OFF position or the ON position. The module keeps checking its internal signals, and if a fault is found the gearbox is disconnected into neutral so that it cannot lock in the wrong gear.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or intermittent contact at shift solenoid S2
- Short to ground on the wire to shift solenoid S2
- Open circuit or short to supply voltage on the wire to shift solenoid S2
- Shift solenoid S2 is damaged
- Damaged output speed sensor or wheel sensor
- Internal fault in the transmission control module
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and road test the car in drive (D) to see whether it comes back
- 2With the ignition off, check the connector at shift solenoid S2 for contact resistance, oxidation and loose contact
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire to shift solenoid S2 is not shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 4If you have diagnostic equipment, read the solenoid status in live data while driving and check whether it changes when you shift
- 5Do not work on the wheel sensors in the ABS system yourself; have a workshop carry out the troubleshooting there
Symptoms you may notice5
- Message in the display
- Shifts too early, too late or too often
- Shifting takes too long
- The automatic gearbox shifts harshly or jerkily
- The engine stalls at idle when a gear is selected
What the fault can affect1
- The gearbox is disconnected into neutral
