What does this fault code mean?
The gear range sensor inside the transmission control module gives a signal that is too low. The sensor has two Hall sensors that detect the selector position, and a parallel Hall sensor is used for diagnosis. The fault may lie in the connector, a wire, the selector cable adjustment or the module itself.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or looseness in the connectors or connections
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Misadjusted gear range sensor
- Internal fault in the transmission control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the selector cable is correctly fitted and adjusted; have a workshop adjust it if needed
- 2With the ignition off, check the connector to the transmission control module for contact resistance, oxidation and looseness
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to ground
- 4Clear the fault code and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 5Have a workshop replace the transmission control module if the fault remains; a new module must be programmed
Symptoms you may notice3
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
- The malfunction indicator (Check engine) lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine does not start
What the fault can affect2
- The engine will not start while the fault is active
- The control module switches to an emergency program
