What does this fault code mean?
The circuit to the output shaft speed sensor is open, so the control module receives no signal from it. The sensor measures the speed of the driveshaft after the transmission, and the module uses it to calculate the transmission's output speed and gear ratio.
Possible causes
- Break in the supply voltage or signal wire to the sensor
- Supply voltage or signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Output shaft speed sensor not working
- A fault inside the TCM itself
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool: read the output shaft speed in live data and check that the value changes when the car rolls
- 2Read and clear the code, then road test to see whether it returns
- 3Have a workshop check the sensor connector and wiring, since the sensor sits inside the transmission
- 4If the fault remains after repairing the wiring or connector, have a workshop replace the sensor or check the control module
Symptoms you may notice5
- Emissions warning lamp (MIL) and the general warning lamp come on
- Lock-up does not work
- Gear changes are harsh or jerky
- No manual gear change
- The car may feel underpowered
What the fault can affect3
- Adaptation function and lock-up are blocked
- The transmission uses the BCM speed signal instead
- If that signal is also faulty, the transmission is controlled by an auxiliary program
