What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named inside or outside tolerance, it applies to the output shaft speed sensor signal not agreeing with the BCM speed signal when the car is driven at higher speed. The control module then receives two different speed values, which can affect gear change control.
Possible causes
- Higher resistance at a connection
- Output shaft speed sensor not seated correctly
- Output shaft speed sensor not working
- Wheel radius does not match the value programmed in the car
What you can do
- 1Has tyres or wheels of a different size been fitted recently? That can change the wheel radius and cause this code; have a workshop check the programmed value
- 2Read and clear the code, then road test to see whether it returns at higher speed
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the output shaft speed with the car's speed in live data during a test drive and check that they roughly agree
- 4Have a workshop check the sensor's seating and connector, since the sensor sits inside the transmission, and correct what is found
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning lamp (MIL) and the general warning lamp come on
- Lock-up does not work
- Gear changes are harsh or jerky
- Gear changes do not happen
- The car may feel underpowered
What the fault can affect3
- Adaptation function, lock-up and slip lock-up are blocked
- Neutral check is blocked
- The control module uses the brake control module's speed signal instead, and if that is missing the transmission is controlled by an auxiliary program
