What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module (TCM) compares the transmission's gear ratio with the ratio that should apply in 6th gear, and the ratio deviates too much. The fault therefore concerns 6th gear and may be caused by a solenoid that is not regulating correctly, worn parts in the transmission, or low system pressure.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or poor contact in the connector to one of the transmission solenoids
- A solenoid regulating incorrectly
- Mechanical faults in the transmission: worn components causing slip or low system pressure
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test the car to see whether it returns in 6th gear
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the solenoids that belong to 6th gear in the tool's test and listen for them operating
- 3Check the fluid condition and level if the car allows it; if it smells burnt or the level is low, have a workshop deal with it
- 4Have a workshop check the solenoid connectors and wiring and the transmission's mechanics, since the fault may lie inside the transmission
