What does this fault code mean?
The gear ratio of the selected gear is close to that of another gear, which the control module interprets as the transmission being stuck. The fault concerns 4th gear, in this case, and may be caused by a damaged solenoid, a worn clutch, poor fluid or wear inside the transmission.
Possible causes
- Damaged shift solenoid in the transmission
- Damaged or worn clutch
- Poor fluid quality
- Mechanical faults in the transmission
- Worn transmission components causing slip or low system pressure
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the shift solenoids in the tool's test and check that they click when activated
- 3If the fluid is dark, smells burnt or the level is low, have a workshop top up or change the fluid and check for leaks
- 4If the solenoids and fluid are sound, have a workshop check the transmission's mechanics, since mechanical damage may require replacement
