What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module (TCM) compares the transmission's gear ratio with the ratio that should apply in 1st gear, and the ratio deviates too much. The fault therefore concerns first gear and may be caused by a solenoid that is not regulating correctly, wear inside the transmission, or a contact fault.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or poor contact in the connector to one of the transmission solenoids
- One of the linear pressure solenoids has stuck or is damaged
- Mechanical faults in the transmission: worn components causing slip or low system pressure
- A fault inside the TCM or its control system
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test the car in first gear to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the solenoids that belong to 1st gear in the tool's test and check that they click
- 3Have a workshop check the transmission fluid quality and level, since the level depends on the fluid temperature
- 4If the solenoids and fluid are sound, have a workshop look into the transmission's mechanics

- The emissions warning lamp (MIL) and the general warning lamp come on
- Abnormal slipping gear changes
- Harsh or missing gear changes
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
- Engine braking does not work, or works less well than normal
What the fault can affect3
- Adaptation function is blocked
- The transmission blocks gears that are not available
- Automatic engine start/stop is switched off
